On June 13th the Michigan Attorney General’s Office announced they were dropping all charges that were filed as a result of the Flint water crisis. After five years and tens of millions of dollars spent on the investigation, the people of Flint are still waiting for some form of justice to occur.
The current Attorney General Dana Nessel explained that the dismissals were a response to problems with the original investigation which was launched under former Attorney General Schuette who unsuccessfully ran for Governor in the last election. Attorney General Nessel pointed out that the dismissal does not preclude recharging the original defendants or adding new ones.
Nayyirah Shariff, the director of the grassroots group Flint rising said the announcement is a “Slap in the face to Flint residents.” It is apparent that the government in place in Michigan during and after the Flint crisis is no better at investigating the problem than they were of providing the residents of Flint with the clean safe drinking water. Hopefully justice delayed will not become justice denied.
